Reminiscing about sports leagues as they relate to recreational opportunities from back home, two Canadians set out to create an opportunity for Expats and Australians alike to come together in the game of sport. Enter the Sydney Sport & Social Club!

Batter Up: New Softball League Coming to Sydney!

For many Australian's, the sun on their face, the smell of the ocean and the sand between their toes defines summer. However, for others, there is a completely different (and equally satisfying) world of sights, sounds and smells out there that describe summer. I’m talking about the roar of all your teammates at the crack of a bat as you smash a homer, the smell of new leather as you break in your mitt, and the most manicured field of grass you have ever seen kissing the dirt diamond. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I am talking about America’s favorite pastime—softball.

Step aside Cricket, Rugby and Netball, this Club will offer Sydney a chance to get involved in a different type of sport with the launch of an adult softball league. The inaugural season is slated to open in October 2015 and will be hosted at the Centennial Parklands baseball fields.

For the initial season, there will be one division comprised of co-ed adult recreational teams, open to male and female players ages 21 years and older. The league consists of 8 regular season games, plus playoffs. In the future, as facilities allow, a more structured categorization of players and their skill levels will be implemented to ensure that competition is more evenly matched, with the prospect of having a men’s only competitive league and a co-ed intermediate league.

This league facilitates a great way to bring people together, meet new people, get some exercise, and have some fun playing a game you love... or a game you will learn to love!

Registration for the Spring and summer 2015 season, which starts on July 15th, is open until Sept. 15 and is open to individual or team registration. A registration fee is required, which covers the cost of field, record-keeping, awards, basic equipment and general administration of the leagues. Teams must provide their own gloves, bats and softballs and are required to wear similar colored jerseys.
